Police went to the Islander apartments at 11:24 p.m. March 22 about a car that struck another in a carport. The witness said he heard a loud crash and crunch outside his window. He saw a car that pulled halfway into the carport. The motorist quickly pulled out and drove off. The motorist, however, walked back to the car he struck to examine the damage. The man then walked into his apartment complex. The officer checked the car and saw it had front end damage on the passenger side bumper. It also had a blue paint transfer. The witness then showed the officer the other car that had front end damage to the front bumper with white paint transfer on it. The officer tried to contact the suspect for questioning. The man’s mother answered the door and said her son was home. The officer saw the man asleep on the sofa. The man told the officer he was driving that night. The man had bloodshot, glassy eyes. He was told to put his shoes on and step outside in order to perform field sobriety tests. He admitted he was drinking that night. The suspect said he could not perform the walk test after completing his first nine steps. He also put his foot down several times during the one-legged stand. He was arrested. He willingly submitted to a breath test, which measured a .241 blood alcohol content. He was cited for drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
An officer March 22 went to a residence about missing money from the man’s bank account. The victim said someone took $4,600 from a bank account. The bank showed him a copy of the check, which the victim believed was the check number he wrote to a woman who cleaned his house. He could not recall the name of her business but provided a phone number. He said he physically gave the check to the woman as payment. It was deposited via a mobile deposit into an account. The writing on the copy of the physical check was difficult to read. The victim already contacted his bank, which then opened an investigation into the transaction.
An officer went to the Amazon site at 11 a.m. March 16 and spoke with the loss prevention worker. He said after an investigation he determined an employee stole a PlayStation 5 on Feb. 25. On that day, a former employee was seen putting a PlayStation 5 into a cart. Later he put those goods into his car, but he did not scan it. He was to scan all items. He then drove away with it. The customer said they never received the PlayStation 5. The suspect is a contracted employee who uses his own car for deliveries. The investigator contacted the suspect who denied taking it. The investigation, however, showed the suspect took it without delivering it to the rightful owner. A security video given to the officer shows the suspect putting the item into his car and leaving. The suspect had not returned to work at Amazon since then. The officer received written and video copies of the incident. He was unable to contact the suspect, but sent paperwork to the Berea court.
An officer checked a car license at Red Roof Inn March 23 and found the owner’s driver’s license was suspended. He stopped the car and asked the driver for identification. He could not provide any. He did give his Social Security number and admitted he didn’t have a valid license. His identification came back as having several warrants. One of the police departments was able to meet and transfer the suspect. During the car’s inventory, the officer found a scale in the front pocket of a pink bag which also had suspected marijuana in a glass jar and a grinder. He was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and given several traffic citations.
